3 day long weekend drive...part 2

Part two is just a carry-on...but I don't want to bore you....

Coming down out of War Creek...

And we hit 97 north...and up towards our next goal...which is Republic...and just before the turn-off at Tonasket, I see a road going up the side the mountain on our right...naturally enough...gotta go see this.

Ranch country...

Red Headed ranch gurl....

And then we get to this.....who knew??

Folks walking the trail to the scene of the crime. We are going to take this hike next spring.

Between Tonasket and Republic...

Finally...Republic...and the Republic Brewery....

Next morning...Monday November 12th....head'r for home. I had been told to take a backroad...the Bridesville-Rockcreek Road...20k's in total and at the 17k mark...to look for the church hidden in the trees.

Sacred Heart Church was built in 1930 by brothers Hugo, Paul and Joe Dumont, with help from several neighbours. Somewhat of a rarity in the area at that time, the church is Catholic, because the Dumont Family originated in Rouen, France. The first Dumonts to emigrate to Canada were Paul and Joe, followed in 1905 by Hugo at the age of sixteen. Deeply religious, it was the Dumonts who instigated the construction of the church. Make no mistake, you won't find the church in the small village of Bridesville itself. This is when you must take a side trip down the steep Rock Creek-Bridesville Road, which will take you to Rock Creek by the way, you come out well past the Petro-Can though, so just be aware of your tank. We discovered this drive years ago and make a point of driving it at different times of year, except Winter. The church is easy to pass by, ie. not easy to spot necessarily. And you'll note, by the wires in the window, do not enter: why? Well, "NO Trespassing" and because there are bee hives in there and you can hear them before you see them. We were lucky that a Mr. Dumount had spotted us taking photos and had stopped to talk about his family and the priest who would ride up from Greenwood every Sunday to give services. Note that you are extremely close to the border when you drive this road.
